Feeling Minnesota

Does it bother anyone else to hear the Minnesota school shooting referred to as "...the worst school shooting since Columbine"?

It's been bothering me, but I was unable to put words to it until Bill framed some for me this morning. We have a benchmark for school shootings! Media bias aside, I think the desensitization of the nation is coming more from the media playing these things over and over again until they become de rigeur than by other TV shows showing violence (for which there is usally some repurcussion).

Okay, back to work now. Really.

Again, to me, this is more of a news story than Terry Schiavo. And are people pronouncing her name right? I keep hearing Shy-voe. Shouldn't it be She-aye-voe? I'm just looking at the spelling. Having the name Angello and everyone pronouncing it Angelo makes me a little picky about these things.

KT and I went to Vegas right after the Columbine shooting. You know Vegas - very service oriented and everyone wants to know where you are from. As soon as we said we were from Denver, the conversation suddenly turned very apathetic. We stopped telling people where we were from because we wanted to enjoy ourselves.

It is pathetic that we have a benchmark for school shootings. However, the media feels like they have to treat the population of this country as if we are borderline retarded and make sure there is a reference for EVERYTHING or us dumb 'Merkins just won't get it! You can even direct this all the way to TV shows - the ultimate showcase of the dumbing of America! Why is Arrested Development flopping, but FOX is premiering a show called Life on a Stick about people that work in a mall corndog restaurant?

God help us all!
